How to Build a Fabric Colour Palette for Your Quilt (Free Swatch List Template)

A patchwork design lives or dies on its fabric choices. The same layout can look muddy or striking depending on the palette. The good news is that choosing fabrics is a skill with a few clear rules, and a swatch list makes it far easier.

Value matters more than colour

Value is how light or dark a fabric is. A quilt reads clearly when neighbouring pieces have different values, even if the colours are similar. Take a photo of your fabric pile and switch it to black and white: if two fabrics look identical in greyscale, they will blur together in the finished quilt.

Balance warm and cool

Warm colours such as madder red, ochre and rust come forward; cool colours such as indigo, sage and grey recede. Use warm fabrics for the subject and cool fabrics for the background to make the focal point pop.

Think in proportions

Most successful palettes follow a rough 60/30/10 split: one dominant fabric, one supporting fabric and a small accent. Selino's swatch list shows the share of each fabric in your design, which makes this easy to check and helps you estimate how much of each to buy.

Mix prints and scale

• Use solids or tone-on-tone prints for large areas.
• Add small-scale prints for texture in mid-sized pieces.
• Save large, busy prints for borders or backing.
• Keep one or two neutrals, such as oatmeal linen, to give the eye a rest.

A simple swatch list template

For each fabric, write down: a short name, a colour code, where it is used, and its share of the design. Pin a small square of each fabric next to the entry. This becomes your shopping list and your cutting guide in one.

Try palettes before you cut

Swapping palettes digitally is free; recutting fabric is not. Generate your design with two or three palette presets, such as Heirloom, Seaside or Boro Indigo, and compare them before you commit.
